Coroner IDs Burlingame Caltrain Victim

BURLINGAME (CBS/BCN) — A man who was fatally struck by a Caltrain in Burlingame Friday morning has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as Mihael Sullivan.

Sullivan, 49, was struck by Caltrain’s northbound train No. 425 at about 10:05 a.m. on the tracks at the Morrell Avenue pedestrian crossing, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

Whether the death of Sullivan, a transient, was accidental or a suicide is under investigation, according to the coroner’s office.

He apparently trespassed onto the tracks at the crossing, which has gates, lights and bells to notify pedestrians of approaching trains, Dunn said.

The crossing is located between the Burlingame and Broadway stations, she said.

The train had about 400 passengers on board when it struck Sullivan. The death caused delays on the Caltrain system for nearly 90 minutes, Dunn said.

The death is the 10th this year on the Caltrain right of way. There were 19 deaths on Caltrain tracks in 2009, she said.

  • John Doe

Michael Sullivan was a great man and a better friend. The events that led up to his tragic end on 11/26/10 are unclear. It only took 4 short years for him to go from having a home, traveling to exotic places and working for
big name corporations to losing everything, losing his grip on reality and living on the street. Michael…We will miss you.

      Hello Mr. Doe,
I knew Michael from work prior to 2001. He was a really sweet guy, very competent and creative. Do you (or anyone here), have any further information about what happened to him in the “four short years” you describe? Did you have any contact with him then? This all began just after he was laid off from BD? Thank you for any info you can provide. Many of his other co-workers & friends are feeling so sorry about what happened to Michael.

  • Mo. Cousin

Some of Mike’s family would like to know more about his recent life. He had lost touch with the family several years ago. How can we contact John Doe, or maybe a former co-worker?

    • former co worker

I worked with him until 2005, then hadn’t heard of his where abouts, I’m checking with other former co workers to see if anyone knew where he went after he left here…if I find more info. I will post it…or you can email me..he was a nice guy and I am very sad to hear of this.

      • Nicole

sorry I meant 2007, not 2005, if you want to please leave your email, I will try to provide what info. I had on Michael and some other people who may be able to help you find out where he was these past few years…

  • At a Loss

We are so saddened to read this story. We, too, had lost touch with Mike. The man we knew was very intelligent, successful, and had a bright future. Our prayers go to his family during this heartbreakingly tragic time in their lives.
