Alcohol-Infused Whipped Cream Creates New Underage Drinking Concern

(KCBS) - Just weeks after cracking down on the alcohol and caffeine-fueled party drink Four Loko, federal regulators and public health officials are now eye-balling a new potential problematic product.

Alcohol-infused whipped cream, being branded as "Whipahol," comes in a can, just like normal whipped cream. Only this one packs a wallop.

"It contains a large amount of alcohol. One of the products contains 18 percent alcohol by volume," said Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor at the Boston University School of Public Health. "So, it's equivalent to having a cocktail in whipped cream."

KCBS' Susan Leigh Taylor Reports:

Siegel said the other thing that makes the product insidious is that its sweetness makes it easy to consume in large amounts, leaving kids in a position where they can easily overdo it.

"This shows us that we really need some system to monitor what youths are drinking," he said.

Dr. Siegel said many young people move from one alcohol fad to the next so quickly that it's hard for regulators and health officials to keep up.
