Deputy Released From Hospital After Santa Cruz Escapee Attack

SANTA CRUZ (CBS 5 / AP) - A Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy allegedly beaten and attacked with a Taser by an inmate who escaped from her custody is out of the hospital.

Santa Cruz County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos said the unnamed deputy was released late Monday from Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

She was allegedly punched several times in the face and bitten severely on the finger by 24-year-old Maurice Ainsworth.

Campos said Ainsworth also caused lacerations to her ear when he attacked her with her stun gun.

The deputy was transporting the 6-foot-7-inch, 275-pound Ainsworth to Dominican Hospital earlier Monday when he allegedly escaped.

Authorities said they captured Ainsworth in a vacant house following foot and aerial searches.

Ainsworth had been in jail on charges of committing a home invasion robbery.
