Lodge Considered For San Francisco's Historic Presido

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Members of the Presidio Trust in San Francisco are considering a plan that could eventually lead to construction of a lodge at the Main Post for park visitors.

From the point of view of the agency, it would be a small lodge with about a hundred rooms and would replicate the old barracks that sit between the two parade grounds at the Main Post.

Public Affairs Director Tia Lombardi said it would bring vitality back to the area.

"We're trying to make this a place for the public. A place where the public is welcomed and comfortable," said Lombardi. "The number one question we're asked is, do you have a place for me to stay?"

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

But the idea of incorporating a lodge into future plans for the Main Post has been met with opposition from the Presidio Historical Association and its president, Gary Widman.

"To put it in the center of the most historic spot seems short-sided and creates a permanent structural scar on what could be a terrific, historic park," Widman said.

The Presidio Trust Board will hold a hearing next week to decide whether to include a lodge as part of the plan to make the Main Post the Presidio's Visitors' Center.
