Stanford Women Begin Run For 7th NCAA Volleyball Title

STANFORD (CBS Sports / AP) ― The drive for a seventh national title begins Friday night at Maples Pavilion for the Stanford women's volleyball team.

Florida is the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, followed by Nebraska and Stanford.

Also expected to be a factor is Penn State, which is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive national title.

The Cardinal ended Penn State's 109-match winning streak in September, the second-longest streak in Division I team sports. The Nittany Lions, however, still won an eighth straight Big Ten title and a tournament slot.

Stanford and Penn State are the only two schools to have appeared in every NCAA Tournament since the NCAA Championship began in 1981.

But Stanford has won more championships and made more Final Four appearances than any other women's volleyball program in the nation.

The Cardinal will meet Albany in the opening round of the tournament Friday night.

Should Stanford advance, the team would travel to Dayton, Ohio for the Dayton Regional Dec. 9-12. The Final Four will be held Dec. 16-18 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
