Redwood City Woman Gets Probation For Domestic Abuse Charge

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) -- A woman who pleaded no contest to slashing her boyfriend with a broken wine bottle was sentenced to probation in San Mateo County Superior Court on Friday.

South San Francisco woman Hortensia Ugas-Alvarado, 47, was arrested in July 2008 after she punched her 62-year-old boyfriend in the face and cut him several times with a broken bottle of merlot, according to the district attorney's office.

The victim, who had apparently admitted to going on a date with another woman, suffered a 3-inch cut on his face, a 10-inch cut on his left bicep and a 6-inch gash in his abdomen, which required surgery.

Ugas-Alvarado took the victim to the hospital and tried to lie about the cause of the injuries, but hospital attendees suspected her explanation and called San Bruno police, according to the district attorney's office.

Ugas-Alvarado was arrested and charged with felony battery causing serious bodily injury, to which she pleaded no contest on Aug. 23.

Judge Lisa Novak ordered the defendant to serve 3 years supervised probation on condition of 364 days in county jail, to pay restitution in an amount to be determined, to abstain from alcohol and drugs, submit to chemical testing and have no contact with the victim, to pay $400 into a domestic violence fund and submit to 104 hours of domestic violence counseling.
