Schwarzenegger To Propose 'Ugly Cuts' In Budget Plan

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Californians can look for a simple solution when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveils his plan for closing a $6 billion budget deficit: more reductions in state spending.

Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear says to "expect ugly cuts" as the governor makes one final attempt to balance the budget before leaving office.

He has called lawmakers into an emergency budget session this week and on Monday will announce a package of bills intended to close the shortfall. The deficit in this fiscal year's budget emerged just a month after Schwarzenegger signed it following a record-long impasse.

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

It was filled with overly optimistic revenue assumptions, cost shifts and about $3.5 billion in federal funding that the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office predicted would not materialize.
