San Francisco's Homicide Rate Up Slightly From Last Year
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Following seven murders in November, San Francisco's homicide rate is now five percent higher than last year.
Mayor Gavin Newsom and Police Chief George Gascon have been touting the drop in the city's overall crime rate. But the recent homicides mean there have been two more murders than last year.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
Captain Michael Biel of the San Francisco Police said the public shouldn't be too alarmed however.
"All of them are separate and totally unrelated instances," Biel said, adding that some arrests have been made.
Two of the killings were gang-related, although not the same gang. There was also a shaking death of a baby, a woman killed in a home invasion robbery and some acquaintances who died in a violent dispute.
The Mayor's Office pointed out that the homicide rate is still down dramatically from 2008 when almost 100 people were murdered.
