Another Route Change Coming Up On Bay Bridge

OAKLAND, (KCBS) - While Caltrans officials say construction of the Bay Bridge could be done earlier than anticipated, drivers are being warned that there are still challenges down the road.

As of now the plan is to re-route the eastbound lanes of traffic heading to Oakland.

"The next conflict we had was on the Oakland touchdown where a portion of the existing bridge was in the way," said Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

Ney said the existing lanes will be pushed farther south to make space for construction crews. That will be sometime in May or June. In November there will be a surgical demolition of the old lanes.

Ney said this shouldn't be too challenging for drivers. Caltrans will launch a public awareness campaign about the lane changes early in 2011.

The price tag for replacing the eastern span of the Bay Bridge is an estimated $6.8 billion.
