Monterey County Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
SEASIDE (BCN) - A U.S. Army staff sergeant from Monterey County died in Afghanistan over the weekend, the governor's office said Wednesday.
Vincent W. Ashlock, 45, of Seaside, died Saturday in Khost province in a non-combat related incident, the governor's office said.
He was assigned to the 890th Engineer Battalion, 168th Engineer Brigade out of Lucedale, Miss.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement that Ashlock was a courageous soldier who dedicated his life to protecting his country.
"Maria and I will be forever grateful for his service, and we send our condolences to Vincent's family and friends," Schwarzenegger said. "We pray that they find comfort as they mourn this tragic loss."
The governor's office said Capitol flags would be flown at half-staff in Ashlock's honor.
