Milpitas Inmates Help Crank Out Christmas Toys

MILPITAS (KCBS) _ Just in time for Christmas, inmates at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas are helping hundreds of needy children in the community by making a record number of toys this year.

Inmates have been carving hundreds of wooden toys, from rocking horses to trucks to train whistles.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

"It makes the time go by and it's fun to give back to kids that don't have anything," said Donald Hubbell, who is behind bars for driving on a suspended license and a prior DUI.

He said he also likes to be away from the rest of the inmate population.

"It's good to get away from all of them. It is. It's a quiet time and we all get along very well," Hubbell said.

Captain Troy Beliveau said the Elmwood "elves" made a record number of toys this year, the tenth anniversary of the woodshop.

"This year, we had no large projects to do so the inmates were able to focus on producing more toys," he said. "We were able to put out 400 toys this year."

All of the toys the inmates built will be going to Toys for Tots in Santa Clara County.
