Vallejo Police Shooting Victim Was Katrina Evacuee

VALLEJO (AP) -- A suspect who was killed by Vallejo police over the weekend was a Hurricane Katrina evacuee who was pursuing a college degree.

The coroner identified the man Monday as 34-year-old Guy Jarreau Jr.

Authorities say Jarreau was shot at least once Saturday after running into an alley and turning toward officers while holding a gun. The officers were responding to a report of a man brandishing a firearm at teenagers.

The shooting remains under investigation.

Friends told the Vallejo Times-Herald that Jarreau moved to the city after being displaced by the 2005 hurricane. He was studying psychology at Napa Valley College and wanted to mentor troubled youths.

Friends say Jarreau recently appeared upset because he was homesick for New Orleans and concerned about his mother's poor health.
