Police Kill Suspect After East Oakland Chase
OAKLAND (CBS 5/BCN) -- A man was shot and killed by Oakland police Monday after a high-speed chase that ended with a crash into a house and a brief foot pursuit, Oakland police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said.
The incident began about 2:15 p.m. while undercover officers in the department's special investigations unit were in East Oakland to look into a shooting that occurred in that area last week, he said.
The officers spotted suspects in last week's shooting in a vehicle with guns, Thomason said.
He said because department protocol bars undercover officers in unmarked vehicles from participating in chases, additional officers in marked patrol cars were called to detain the suspects.
Those officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, but the driver sped off and entered eastbound Interstate Highway 580, Thomason said.
The chase continued on the highway and city streets until the vehicle crashed into a house in the 3300 block of 13th Avenue, near Highland Hospital.
Four men then got out of the car and ran, Thomason said.
One was shot by two officers and was pronounced dead at the scene,
Thomason said. A gun was found near that suspect, and an assault weapon was found in the crashed car, he said.
Octavia Edwards told CBS 5 her 19-year-old son Obataiye was the man shot by officers. She positively identified her son after seeing a photo provided by the Alameda County Coroner's Office.
Two of the other men were detained and one remains at large, Thomason said.
Police are still searching the neighborhood for the fourth suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.
Thomason said it does not appear anyone inside the house where the crash occurred was injured.
He said this is the sixth officer-involved shooting in Oakland this year. Of those, four have been fatal.
