San Francisco Deemed Most Dangerous For Pedestrians

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It may come as little surprise to anyone who walks the streets of San Francisco: it's topped the list in a survey of most dangerous cities for pedestrians.

KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:

A newspaper analysis revealed that more than hundreds of people were struck by vehicles in San Francisco in 2008.

Many of those 800 pedestrians were badly injured, some even killed.

Pedestrian Bob Branick suggested being as visible as possible to motorists.

"You also have to do a little thinking on your own as well. You have to pretty much assume that somebody will not see you," he reasoned.

"Yes I do, with my infant, six weeks old," a woman who identified herself as Delise said of her walking habits. "And no, I haven't seen anything and I haven't been a victim."

San Francisco ranked even more dangerous for pedestrians than London, Tokyo, and even New York.

City leaders have recently targeted the most dangerous areas of San Francisco, looking to lower speed limits in places like downtown, the Mission and Richmond districts.
