San Jose City Manager Moves To Fire Cop Involved In Beating

SAN JOSE (KCBS) - San Jose City Manager Debra Figone is moving to fire one of two officers who violently arrested a college student last year in an incident that was caught on tape.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

The smart phone video shows two police officers repeatedly striking and then tasing San Jose State student Phuong Ho.

The San Jose Police Department had recommended that the officers, who were not criminally charged, be suspended without pay.

But according to the San Jose Mercury News, Figone wants to fire veteran Officer Kenneth Siegel for using "unnecessary and unreasonable" force.

The move is sparking outrage among rank and file officers.

But Richard Konda with the Asian Law Alliance said he is backing Figone's decision.

"I think her action will send a strong message that this kind of excessive violence won't be tolerated," said Konda.

Officer Siegel is expected to appeal his termination. Ho is currently suing the city for his violent arrest.
