3rd Man Dies In South San Francisco Shooting

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) -- A third victim died Thursday afternoon from wounds inflicted by a shooting that killed two men Wednesday night, according to South San Francisco police.

The victim was shot along with five others near the intersection of Eighth Lane and Linden Avenue around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

He was found on one side of Eighth Lane with two teenage men who had also been shot, police Sgt. Joni Lee said.

Omar Cortez, 18, and Gonzalo Avalos, 19, both South San Francisco residents, were pronounced dead on the scene.

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

The now-deceased victim—whose name has not been released by the San Mateo County coroner's office as of 5 p.m.—was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. He was in critical condition until late Thursday afternoon, when he succumbed to his wounds, police said.

Three other male victims, all between the ages of 15 and 20, were found across the street suffering from wounds not considered to be life threatening, Lee said.

The three victims were also taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses told police they saw three male suspects in their late teens or early 20s driving away from the shooting in a dark-colored early 2000s-model Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows.

The San Mateo County gang intelligence unit is actively engaged in assisting local police with the investigation.

"The full resources of the city will be brought to bear to apprehend the perpetrators," South San Francisco Mayor Kevin Mullin said in a statement.

Police are asking anyone with information that might help the investigation to contact South San Francisco police at (650) 877-8900.

The Police Department is stepping up patrols in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred and the community has been asked to participate in efforts to stem gang activity.
