Oakland Parking Meter Fines Increase By $3 In January
OAKLAND (BCN) -- Fines for parking meter violations in Oakland will increase by $3 on Jan. 3.
The $3 increase will bring the cost of the average meter fine up from $55 to $58.
The increase will go toward the state's Trial Court Trust Fund and won't pay for any Oakland programs or services, according to city officials.
The city will continue collecting $45 from each meter fine. The remaining $13 will go to the state, according to officials.
The $3 increase took effect on Dec. 7, but officials delayed collecting the fee until January so that Oakland shoppers wouldn't be deterred from spending money on gifts for the holidays.
The decision to delay collecting fees until January is estimated to cost the city about $75,000, according to officials.
