Apple Patents Glasses-Free 3-D

SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- A future generation of iPads and iPods may have images that appear to leap out of their touch screens.

Apple has patented new technology that involves glasses-free 3-D. The patent is for a new technology that produces 3-D images and even holograms. The system uses tiny pixel-size domes that project images into viewers' left and right eyes creating a 3-D effect without the need for glasses.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

While there may be multiple applications for this technology on iPads and iPods, KCBS Tech Analyst Larry Magid thinks it may also be used for larger displays such as TVs.

There's no word on when this technology will appear in a shipping product. An Apple spokesperson said the company doesn't comment on patents or rumors.
