Police ID Santa Cruz County Trailer Fire Victim
SANTA CRUZ (CBS/BCN) -- Authorities have identified a woman killed in a trailer fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains early Sunday morning.
Susie MacMillan, 57, died before firefighters arrived at the scene, according to Chief Pat O'Connell of the Branciforte Fire Protection District.
MacMillan was a caretaker and lived in a trailer at 1111 Jarvis Road in unincorporated Santa Cruz County near Scotts Valley, O'Connell said.
Firefighters responded to the one-alarm fire at about 3:30 a.m.
"Someone saw the fire from a half mile or more away," O'Connell said. "They said they saw an orange glow in the distance."
O'Connell said firefighters arrived in the area about 10 minutes later but had a difficult time locating the fire due to the fog.
The fire started in a part of the trailer where there was a space heater, and that is believed to have been the cause, O'Connell said.
MacMillan, who is survived by three sons, had spent the previous evening celebrating the holidays with family, O'Connell said.
