Numbers Drawn For Mega Millions Jackpot Worth $355 Million

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) — Countless dreams have been shredded. Millions watched Tuesday night's drawing of the Mega Millions numbers that could have resulted in a $355 million prize for an extremely lucky ticket holder.

The winning numbers were 4, 8, 15, 25, 47, with 42 being the Mega Ball number.

The prize is the fourth largest in U.S. history and the second largest in Mega Millions history, which is played in California, 40 other states and in Washington, DC. The lottery's prize of $390 million in March 2007 remains the nation's richest on record.

The Mega Millions game is similar to Powerball—players try to win by matching five regular numbers plus the "Mega ball." Tickets cost $1.

Besides the jackpot, prizes range from $2 to $250,000. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 8 p.m. Pacific time.

The jackpot's cash option works out to about $224 million.

The game's website was down momentarily Tuesday night, around the time that the winning numbers would be posted. Officials stripped the site down to a simple Web page with the logo and the jackpot amount, to help speed connections because of "unprecedented traffic."
