Man Gunned Down In West Oakland; 3rd Homicide Of 2011

OAKLAND (BCN) -- A man who was killed in a shooting in West Oakland on Wednesday night has been identified as Donald Johnson, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

The shooting was reported around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of 16th and Center streets, Oakland police Officer Holly Joshi said.

Officers found Johnson, 46, of Oakland, inside a parked car, Joshi said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homicide is Oakland's third in 2011. The city's first homicide of 2010 didn't occur until Jan. 10 of that year.

The shooting was also the second reported in Oakland on Wednesday night.

A 36-year-old man was critically injured around 7:10 p.m. in a shooting in the 700 block of Sycamore Street, Joshi said.

No arrests have been made in connection with either shooting, and no suspect information was immediately available Thursday, she said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Police Department's homicide section at (510) 238-3821.
