Antioch Seeks Donations For Police Department

ANTIOCH (AP) -- Budget woes are hitting Antioch so hard that city officials are asking for donations for the city's police department.

The city has opened a bank account for donations to help pay for police services.

Mayor Jim Davis told the Contra Costa Times that residents have been asking how they can donate money to match a pledge made by Antioch Auto Center President Tom Nokes last month for police funding.

The newspaper reports that the city is also seeking donations from corporations and larger businesses in the community.

Antioch officials said earlier this week that six police officers who were to be laid off last week will keep their jobs until at least Jan. 21, thanks to private donations.

The city is still seeking concessions with the police officers union.
