Magnitude 4.1 Quake Near San Jose Felt Across Bay Area

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS / AP / BCN) -- Two aftershocks were reported after a magnitude 4.1 earthquake jolted San Jose and much of the surrounding Bay Area late Friday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the moderate quake hit about 13 miles east of downtown San Jose around 4:10 p.m. Friday.

The tremor had a depth of 4.4 miles, according to the USGS.

Officials said the 18-story San Jose City Hall building swayed due to the quake, but San Jose police said they had no immediate reports of any damage or injuries in the area.

An employee at the Reid-Hillview Airport, the closest airport to the quake's epicenter, said operations were continuing as usual there.

"We felt it, but as far as we can tell, nothing fell down, and no aircraft were damaged or buildings were damaged," he said.

The owner of the Ornamental Edibles store, which sells vegetable seeds out of San Jose, felt it at 5810 Killarney Circle.

"There was a little precursor, a little bit of a shake and then a jolt," Pam Wiggitt said.

"By the time we looked at each other it was almost over," said Margie King, owner of MK Technical Services, a staffing agency at 4349 San Felipe Road in San Jose.

"There was the shaking sound then a short rumble," said Kathleen Kelley, a realtor who was at home in the Evergreen area of south San Jose when the quake hit.

The quake was strong enough to be felt 60 miles to the north in San Francisco and in Oakland and other East Bay communities.

Bay Area Rapid Transit briefly shut down service to check for damage from the temblor, but was back up and running within five or 10 minutes, a dispatcher said.

"My cubicle was swaying and it took me a minute to realize it was not me or anyone walking by," said Pamela Ringer-Britz, a project manager at SFL Data at 100 California Street.

"Everyone in my office felt it," she said.

"It lasted just a few seconds but really shook the whole 5-story building" at 101 Spear Street, said Jim Troup, an AT&T employee.

The quake appeared to be felt as far north as Petaluma and as far east as Pleasanton.

A couple of aftershocks later occured in the same South Bay location as the quake.

USGS geophysicist Shengzao Chen said two aftershocks were
felt within 11 minutes of the quake, one with a magnitude 2.6 and
then another with a 2.1 magnitude.
