Ed Lee Set To Be Interim Mayor Of San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, (KCBS) -- Former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was sworn in Monday afternoon as California's new Lt. Governor paving the way for City Administrator Ed Lee to become interim mayor for the next 12 months.

On Tuesday the San Francisco Supervisors will officially name Lee interim mayor, a position he said he didn't seek or expect.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"It's been 21 years and obviously this is a culmination of a career of public service, and I'm excited and very humbled of course," he said.

One of the challenges Lee will face is the city's $360 million deficit. Lee said the city budget will be his immediate focus.

"I've got to make sure our board, and my office balance the budget correctly, the San Francisco way," he said.

Lee will also need to find a new police chief. The job opened up when Newsom named Chief George Gascon district attorney to replace Kamala Harris, who is now attorney general of California.
