Limits Proposed On Dogs At Golden Gate National Recreation Area

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- Federal parks officials are proposing new rules that would require dogs to be leashed in some parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and ban them altogether from still other parts of the park.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

A dog management plan for the park recommends dogs not be allowed in parts of San Francisco's Crissy Field, Ocean Beach and Fort Funston.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the ban would also apply to Muir Beach, a part of the park in Marin County.

A 90-day public comment period on the plan begins on Friday. A final decision could come in 2012.

Golden Gate Recreation Area Superintendent Frank Dean says parks officials want to ensure native vegetation and protected species are not disturbed while remaining sensitive to the needs of dog owners.
