San Jose Police Auditor, Mexican Consulate To Meet Over Complaints

SAN JOSE (CBS/BCN) – San Jose’s independent police auditor and the consul general of Mexico signed a memo of understanding Wednesday to promote outreach to the Mexican community.

KCBS’ Melissa Culross Reports:

The memo was signed Wednesday morning at the independent police auditor’s office. In attendance were independent police auditor LaDoris Cordell, Consul General David Figueroa Ortega, Mayor Chuck Reed, City Council members Sam Liccardo and Kansen Chu, and acting police Chief Chris Moore.

The partnership will allow for a staff member of the independent police auditor’s office to visit the Mexican Consulate once a month to hear complaints and concerns from the community regarding the police misconduct complaint process.

Ortega said the collaboration would have a positive impact on the Mexican community, some of whom cannot speak English or have difficulty trusting law enforcement.

“They cannot only be aware of their right to express, but also to increase their trust in the San Jose Police Department,” he said. “In the end, this joint effort will be beneficial to institutions, authorities, and the people of this city.”

The memo resulted from Ortega’s concern that some members of the community could be hesitant to express their concerns to the Police Department or independent police auditor’s office.

Reed said the additional outreach would strengthen the department’s relationship with the city’s diverse communities.

The independent police auditor’s office carries out objective reviews of police misconduct investigations, makes recommendations regarding Police Department policies and procedures, and conducts public outreach and education.

The Consulate General of Mexico in San Jose provides consular protection and assistance to Mexican nationals who reside in Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties.

Yep, let’s just let Mexicans run the streets drunk and commiting crimes. Then they don’t want to learn the English language. That is not anyone’s problem that they cannot speak english no police officer should have to learn Spanish just to make them happy. I am sick of hearing people slander the police officers. They are doing their jobs. Mexican’s need to learn that this is a land of laws and just because you ar lazy criminals does not mean you have anymore rights than the good US citizens do.

Juan, I could not have said it better. Seems they come here illegally and then don’t like our laws so they get there little latino organizations to say that they are targeted by the police. That is BS. They need to stop breaking the law if they do not want to get stopped by our police officers.

  • que envidia

que envidia le has de tener a los Mexicanos. Cargando un nombre como Juan Jose Migue Gonzalez y hablando asi? Mejor que sea tu el primero en regresarse.

  • John

Who said Mexicans don’t like our laws??… Peace and J.J.M Gonzalez refer to Mexicans as if they were the only people who don’t speak english, then you have more ethnic groups that as well don’t speak english… so what’s the deal?? Not all Mexicans are criminals eaither, if you take a look most of these criminals are gangsters who yes may be from Mexican origin, but the fact that they are born here, makes them think they’re American… and please Don’t make me laugh with your comments

  • Comeonenow

So, I understand to main issues is that Mexicans feel they get stopped by police more so than anyone else. I’m pretty sure the areas this is happening in is made up mostly of Mexicans in the first place. So, if the population is greater for mexicans in that area then it would make sense that the number of arrests and police contact would be with mexicans. The police are the victims here not the mexicans.

I could not have said it any better Comeonenow

These Police Auditors should all be fired because it is pretty clear that they are not doing their jobs. Get a new educated bunch so that they be professional and do the right thing rather then get together with some Mexican group and waste our tax dollars.
