Feb 1st Brings Stricter Gun Laws To California

MARTINEZ (KCBS)- Beginning February 1st, gun dealers in California who sell handgun ammunition will have to get more information from customers. Buyers will have to show a photo ID, give a thumbprint, and give out their address and birth date.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

The idea is to make it easier for police to trace ammunition purchases.

Ron Kennedy, who owns the Canyon Sports Gun Store in Martinez told KCBS that the new law won't make a difference at his shop.

"It's not going to affect anybody that's a law-abiding guy anyway, and criminals don't buy ammunition at gun stores – they steal it," said Kennedy.

This week, a judge in Fresno County is expected to hear arguments on a suit involving the new law.
