San Jose Volunteers Trained For Homeless Census
SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Bay Area counties are getting ready for the biennial homeless count. Training kicked off Thursday in San Jose. The Homeless Census and Survey employs a number of homeless people like Andrew Molina to work as expert guides.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
"I've been homeless for three years," said Molina. "I've been all over San Jose, and the homeless are under freeways, and not only that but also inside of freeways."
Peter Connery, vice president of Applied Survey Research, who was conducing the training, said it's critical that counties get an accurate number.
"Agencies throughout the county use the data to measure their progress towards ending homelessness," said Connery. "They also measure the needs of the homeless for their service delivery planning."
The count will be conducted in San Jose next Tuesday and Wednesday night. The last census found 7,000 people in need of shelter on any given night.
