Vallejo 18-Year-Olds 1st Twin Sisters To Join U.S. Army
VALLEJO (AP) -- Two Vallejo sisters have joined the U.S. Army in what their recruiters say may be the first case in California of identical twin girls signing up for service together.
Eighteen-year-old Meilyn Ventura-Benel and her sister, Melissa, will soon head off to boot camp in South Carolina after enlisting last month.
Army Corp. Jaime De La Cruz said recruiters were unable to find any other cases of identical twin girls joining the Army.
The girls made the decision to enlist a week before their mother died of cancer on Christmas Eve. They want to get an education and become U.S. citizens.
The twins say they are always together. But that will change after boot camp when Meilyn will remain on active duty in Virginia and Melissa will return to Vallejo to serve in the Army Reserve.
