Toxic Flea Collar Lawsuit Filed Referencing California's Prop 65
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The National Resources Defense Council has filed a lawsuit in an effort to protect both pets and kids from toxic flea collars.
The suit has been filed against the Environmental Protection Agency to require toxic labeling on flea collars that contain a chemical linked to cancer.
"The lawsuit was in reference to California's Proposition 65, which requires that chemicals that are known to the state of California to cause cancer have a label on them to indicate to the consumer that the chemical causes cancer," said Miriam Rotkin-Ellman, a scientist with the NRDC.

Rotkin-Ellman said the petition is asking for even more stringent regulations and they're asking the EPA to act on its own findings.
"The EPA has done its own risk assessment of the chemical propoxur flea collars. And their analysis found that the levels of residue left on pet's fur would be unsafe for children, just during normal use of a flea collar," she said.
KCBS tried to contact the EPA for this story but they did not respond.
