Bay Area Watch Parties Set For State Of The Union Address

Watch Online - President Obama State of the Union Speech, 6pm

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) - Bay Area residents were planning get-togethers Tuesday night to watch President Obama's State of the Union address.

"It's sort of like the Super Bowl of politics," said Emily Dulcan, a spokeswoman for Organizing for America.

The group is planning watch parties in San Francisco and Oakland Tuesday night.

Both parties begin at 5 p.m. and the speech starts at 6 p.m.  Organizers hope Tuesday night's speech will prompt a discussion on how individuals and the community can support the president's agenda.

Organizing for America, the grassroots arm of the Democratic National Committee, relies mainly on volunteers.

"We hope to do some organizing tonight. People can reflect on what they heard and talk about what they can do in their communities," Dulcan said.

The San Francisco event was to be held at Tosca Cafe and Bar at 242 Columbus Ave. The Oakland event was to be held at Everett and Jones BBQ at 126 Broadway.

The University of San Francisco is also hoping Tuesday night's speech will prompt a lively discussion.

The school was hosting a viewing party scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Parina Lounge in the University Center. It was open to all students and community members.

"We hope that people will engage in the process and take time to listen, have thoughts about it, and be able to discuss opinions in a civil and educated manner," university spokeswoman Anne-Marie Devine said.
