Jury Convicts San Francisco Skyscraper Climber 'SpiderDan'
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — Dan "SpiderDan" Goodwin said he scaled San Francisco's 58-story Millennium Tower to raise fire safety awareness, but a jury Tuesday afternoon convicted him of two misdemeanor counts.
Jurors in San Francisco County Superior Court deliberated for three hours before finding the 55-year-old Goodwin guilty of creating a public nuisance and evading arrest.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Judge Teri Jackson dismissed a third count, a trespassing charge against Goodwin, before giving the case to the jury.
Goodwin had testified on Monday that he climbed the Mission Street residential high-rise on Sept. 6 on a crusade to draw attention to what he saw as a national lack of preparedness to fight skyscraper fires.
Goodwin, who is a cancer survivor, also had said he wanted to show people can beat the deadly disease and scale tall buildings.
