San Jose Leaders Vow Comprehensive Response To Surge In Gang Violence

SAN JOSE (KCBS/BCN) - A violent spike in gang violence in San Jose prompted an emergency community meeting and a candlelight vigil Monday night.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

The city has already had seven homicides this year. Dozens of mourners gathered in front of an East San Jose restaurant to remember the latest victim of the violence, an 18 year old who was gunned down last Friday.

Authorities said the murder of Hugo Gutierrez was, in fact, a gang-related homicide.

Residents were invited to discuss the crimes and help identify proactive measures to prevent future violence.

The meeting, hosted by Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen, began at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Santee Neighborhood Action Center at 1535 Santee Drive.

Staff from the city's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services department planned to attend, along with members of the Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force and the San Jose Police Department.
