Congestion Pricing Considered For Two More Bay Area Bridges

SAN MATEO (KCBS) - Officials on the peninsula have begun pushing for higher tolls during commute hours on the San Mateo and Dumbarton bridges.

Currently, the Bay Bridge is the only state-run span in the Bay Area employing congestion pricing, which raises tolls to $6 during commute hours, $4 at off-peak hours and $5 on weekends.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
Proponents of congestion pricing on the peninsula call the Bay Bridge pricing tier a success.

"My primary reason is to ease congestion," explained Richard Napier, executive director of the City-County Association of Governments of San Mateo County. "Because what happens is there are a lot of people who have flexibility in the time when they go and certainly by paying a higher fee during one time versus another, it'll convince them to take that time. And so my primary reason is for the relief of congestion."

The idea requires approval by entities on the peninsula, the Bay Area Toll Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
