San Leandro Carjacking, Assault Suspect Arrested In Oakland

SAN LEANDRO (BCN) - A man suspected of committing a carjacking in San Leandro in early January was arrested in Oakland on Saturday afternoon, police said.

On Jan. 5, officers from the San Leandro Police Department responded to a report of a carjacking at 685 Bancroft Ave. at about 6:20 p.m.

Officers located a female victim who told police that a man had brandished a firearm and ordered her from her 1998 Mercedes.

As she exited her car, the man grabbed her purse, pulled her from the car, and struck her in the left forearm with the gun, breaking her arm, police said. The man then fled in the woman's car.

At about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oakland police officers spotted 20-year-old James Magnum sitting in a car with three other people near 87th and Bancroft avenues and recognized him from photos distributed by San Leandro police.

The officers conducted a "high risk" traffic stop on the vehicle and took Mangum into custody.

Mangum was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, carjacking and using a firearm in the commission of a crime. Police said Mangum also had an outstanding parole warrant.
