OAKLAND (BCN) -- A man shot at two officers who were in their police car in Oakland Saturday evening, and police arrested the man and an alleged accomplice shortly after the shooting.

Police responded to reports of a man with a gun near the 5800 block of Genoa Street about 6:35 p.m., Oakland police Officer Moore said.

They spotted a man who matched a description of the armed suspect in the 800 block of 59th Street, Officer Holly Joshis aid.

As the officers approached him, the man pulled out a gun and shot at them, Joshi said. No one was hit by the gunfire.

The man then ran away but was seen a short time later attempting to leave the area as a passenger in a car, according to Joshi.

He was stopped and arrested, and identified as 31-year-old Benny Martin of Oakland, Joshi said.

The driver of the getaway car, 20-year-old Anthony Perry of Oakland, was also arrested, she said.

Joshi said Martin confessed to the shooting and Perry also gave an incriminating statement. Both were booked into the Glenn Dyer Jail in Oakland on suspicion of attempted murder, she said.

Martin and Perry, who are being held without bail, haven't yet been charged but are tentatively scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Joshi said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call investigators at (510) 238-3426.
