Bay Area Muslims Angered Over Congressman’s Planned Hearings

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – A Republican Congressman from New York plans to hold hearings on what he calls the radicalization of the American Muslim community, and that’s raising lots of concerns among Bay Area Muslims.

KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports:

”Representative Peter King has a history of making anti-Muslim statements, such as saying that ’85 percent of Muslims’ leadership are enemies among us,’ and that ‘there are too many mosques in America,’” said Shafath Syed, president of the South Bay Islamic Association. “So we believe that he has an agenda and that he is not objective.”

Syed said that this amounts to McCarthyism all over again.

”Joe McCarthy had this notion that there were communists living among us, and that they were subverting the United States, and that we had to weed out the communists,” said Syed. “Well, Peter King is saying that the Muslims among us cannot be loyal, so it’s almost an exact duplicate of what happened in the McCarthy hearings.”

King tells the New York Daily News that a congressional probe is needed because Al Qaeda has recently targeted Muslims living in the U.S. as potential terror recruits.
