Driver In Intensive Care After Pescadero Cliff Plunge

PESCADERO (BCN) - A motorist whose car plummeted 100 yards down a cliff in San Mateo County on Saturday remained in critical condition Monday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Crews responded to a report at about 3 p.m. Saturday that a silver Toyota Corolla had gone down a cliff near state Highway 1 and Pescadero Beach, CHP Officer Eric Anderson said.

The motorist, a 65-year-old Sunnyvale man, was found on the beach unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

The highway was closed in both directions at 3:40 p.m. while a helicopter landed and rescued the man, Anderson said.

Afterward, the highway was limited to one-way traffic while the car was towed and the crash investigated.

Montiel said the man remained in intensive care Sunday evening.
