WALNUT CREEK (BCN) – The East Bay Municipal Utility District was trying to determine what caused an explosion and fire at a water pumping plant in Walnut Creek Monday morning, EBMUD spokesman Charles Hardy said.

The incident was reported at 7:09 a.m. at 1841 Geary Road, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Lewis Broschard said.

Seventeen firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and police shut down Geary Road between Buena Vista Avenue and Hall Lane, authorities said.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports:

Broschard said firefighters had to confirm with PG&E that power to the plant was off before they could start putting water on it. They had the fire out by 7:57 a.m.

No injuries were reported and no other structures were threatened, Broschard said.

Although the blaze was initially reported as a transformer fire, Broschard said the problem actually involved switch gear used to transfer power from PG&E to EBMUD.

I live about 150 yards from the pumping station. The fire and explosions started at about 7:10 a.m., but for at least 30 minutes before there were problems with the electrical system in the neighborhood, causing the lights to flicker.

  2. Benjamin Bates says:

We evacuated the moment we saw the flame and heard the vibrations under our house. We waited for County Fire to give us the All Clear to return. Flame was at least a hundred feet high when seen from our kitchen window

  3. Carolyn Rollins says:

We live across the trail from the pumping station. We were scared for our lives and jumped into the car with our three kids half-dressed when we heard the explosions and saw that the fire was growing.

We don’t want EBMUD in our neigburhood, because is to dangerous for us. They don’t belong here. Please save our community.

  5. Jessica says:

No Daniel is NOT kidding! I agree! I want them gone!!! Too close to a neighborhood!! We have kids to worry about. Nobody will understand the terror we went through! Waking up to what sounded like war, having to grab your kids and flee in a matter of seconds, because you don’t know how long you have until this explosion could blow up your home!! It was traumatizing!! We were scared for our lives!! My daughter is scared of everything now! Go somewhere else EBMUD!!!!!!

Jessica, sounds to me like you need to move, that facility was in place many years before the houses weree built around it. I am sorry that your child is scared but the region needs these facilities to function and they are what makes your house and neighborhood able to be lived in. This reminds me of so many people that move in next to an airport and then complain about the noise…
