Mexican Government Provides Education Funding For California College Students

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- Mexico's Consul for Community Affairs in San Francisco, Sandra Almazan, said the government is distributing about $836,000 to help students go to college in America. The money is primarily for Mexican-Americans and Mexican nationals who live here.

"We are giving to different organizations that are focused to giving grants to the students," said Almazan.

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

Students do not need to be in this country legally to qualify. At San Francisco City College, they don't even have to be Mexican. Student council president Juan Zendejas said any student can apply for the college cash no matter what their ethnic background.

"The money they get, they can use for books, transportation, for anything," said Zendejas.

The program is a collaboration with the University of California to help raise the educational levels of Mexicans in America.
