SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- The finishing touches are being put on Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport, meaning that the new home for American Airlines and Virgin America will reopen in April, on-time and under budget. It’s a project three years in the making.

KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports:

With using a design-build methodology we saved about 12 to 18 months off the usual construction cycle,” said John Martin, SFO director. “The project is also being delivered a few million dollars under budget.”

Terminal 2 is a modern facility that will feature club-like seating; a food marketplace, hydration station and children’s play area. There are also changing stations in the men’s bathrooms.

Virgin America CEO David Cush had praise for the city in having the courage to forge ahead with the project given the current economy.

“We told John to build it and we will come,” said Cush. “And now we’re coming, and we’re growing and we’re going to fill up our gates here pretty soon.”

Virgin will run 41 flights out of SFO by the end of the summer, adding up to 70 daily flights in the coming years. The terminal will also be home to American Airlines new 9,400 square foot Admirals Club.
