ConsumerWatch: Sleep Struggles Follow Sofa Bed Purchase

(CBS) - When Dave Dickes heard his family was visiting for the holidays, he bought a brand new sofa bed at Jennifer Convertibles.

"We were looking for a queen size thinking that would be really the minimum size for two full grown large adults," Dickes said.

Dickes even paid an extra $270 to upgrade his sofa bed with a memory foam mattress bringing the total to $1,177.

"We just expected it was going to be comfortable to sleep on for a couple of days," he said.

But Dickens said his family couldn't even make it one night.

"First of all they would sink into it so far that when you were on your side you would feel the two support bars that were across your hips and shoulders," he said.

That's including the memory foam mattress on top of the base mattress. "It doesn't feel like the same one I laid at the store," he said. Dickens filled a complaint and Jennifer Convertibles replaced the sofa bed frame under its one year guarantee policy. But Dickens said that didn't fix the problem. He then emailed ConsumerWatch where we had upholstery expert Luis Penaloza take a look. "I think he needs to change the mattress," he said. "One firmer then this one cause this one is like too soft."

When it came to the mechanism, Penaloza said it was fine. As for the sofa sagging, according to Penaloza that's normal. "I was quiet surprised because in the past the bed we had from Jennifer Convertibles was very comfortable," Dickes said. After ConsumerWatch got involved Jennifer Convertibles sent Dickes a new memory foam mattress. But Dickes said he was still uncomfortable, so Jennifer Convertibles gave him a full refund.
