Gov. Brown's Plan To Transfer State Prisoners Under Attack
SAN MATEO (KCBS) - San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks has become the latest to speak out against Gov. Jerry Brown's plan to thin the state prison population by transferring low-risk inmates to jails closer to their homes. The governor has said the state can save money by reimbursing the counties for taking the inmates, instead of keeping them in state prisons.

Munks was expected to tell a San Mateo County supervisors' committee on Monday that his jailers were already over capacity, meaning there was no room for the state prisoners the governor wants transferred to local jails.
San Mateo County already houses more than 1,000 inmates in facilities meant for just 834. Under the governor's plan, the county could be forced to house 40% more by year's end, something Munks described as a potential crisis.
