Giants Closer Wilson Sits Out With Sore Back
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson had his scheduled throwing session delayed Thursday because of tightness in his back.
The injury isn't considered serious for last season's major league saves leader, whose bushy black beard has made him as popular as his reliable pitching in the ninth inning. Manager Bruce Bochy said Wilson received treatment on the back Thursday and could be ready to throw again for the World Series champions by Friday at Scottsdale Stadium.
"We're better off backing him off, let him get this treatment and let that tight back clear up," Bochy said after pitchers and catchers worked out Thursday. "Hopefully he'll be out here tomorrow. If he has any discomfort, we'll back him off. We have plenty of time with him."
Wilson has dealt with back trouble in the past, but never anything that has cost him significant time.
The right-hander went 3-3 with a 1.81 ERA and 48 saves in 2010. He recorded the final out of the World Series against the Rangers for the Giants' first championship since 1954.
Bochy said it's unclear when Wilson's back began bothering him this time. Wilson, a two-time All-Star in five big league seasons, has among the toughest, most regimented workout routines of any of his teammates—in season and out. Others like starters Matt Cain and Barry Zito have even used some of Wilson's exercises.
Wilson initially threw Tuesday but didn't look like himself.
"It's just a little setback there with Willie," Bochy said.
Also, two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum was fine to pitch Thursday after dealing with a sore neck a day earlier.
