Mt. Diablo Schools Strike Deal With Concord Car Dealers

CONCORD (KCBS) - The Mt. Diablo Unified School District which is facing an $11 million deficit next year is getting some help from more than a dozen Concord car dealerships.

A deal has been worked out where the dealers will donate a percentage of car sales from President's Day weekend to the cash-strapped school district.

John Montagh, Concord's Redevelopment and Housing Manager, said sports programs and the Mt. Diablo Music Education Foundation, which has suffered from significantly reduced funding, could benefit from the sale.

"14 dealers in Concord and the city decided that would be a good idea and are focusing on the President's Day weekend," said Montagh.

Foundation President Joan Miller welcomes any fundraiser that doesn't require her to bake cookies.

"This year, because we didn't raise enough, we needed about $1 million, and we have about $110,000," Miller said.
