Santa Clara DA Will Reopen Cold Case Unit
SANTA CLARA (KCBS) - Santa Clara County's cold case unit is being reopened by the District Attorney's office after being shut down in 2007 due to budget cuts.
Criminals who think they may have gotten away with murder and other old crimes may not be able to sleep as well at night as a result.
Incoming District Attorney Jeff Rosen is reinstating the unit to fulfill a campaign promise and has appointed one of his top prosecutors to investigate unsolved murder and rape cases on a full-time basis.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
"Everyone in our community, including the perpetrators of these horrendous crimes should know that we're not giving up on solving them in the DA's office and in fact, we are going to solve them," Rosen said with determination.
In years past there has been some turf battle between various police departments when it comes to opening up their case files, according to Rosen.
"In the spirit of cooperation, all of those departments are going to open up their files and work with us so we can review them and work with them to solve these cases," Rosen added.
The ability to test for DNA evidence has lead to dozens of cold case convictions nationwide.
