San Jose School Arson Causes $5,000 In Damages

SAN JOSE (BCN) - An arson fire that scorched a high school bathroom in San Jose on Wednesday caused an estimated $5,000 in damage, a fire department spokeswoman said.

Firefighters responded around 10 a.m. to a one-alarm fire in the men's bathroom at Broadway High School at 4825 Speak Lane, San Jose fire Capt. Debbie Ward said.

They extinguished the blaze by about 10:30 a.m.

School officials reported the fire after seeing heavy smoke coming from the bathroom doors, Ward said.

All 200 students at the school were evacuated for about half an hour, according to the school's spokeswoman Lynn Frease. No one was injured in the fire, Ward said.

Arson investigators have determined that the fire was intentionally set, Ward said. No arrests have been made, but an investigation is under way.
