The Alpine Meadows ski resort just north of Tahoe reported receiving up to 4 feet of snow over a 24-hour period ending Friday morning for a total of as much as 9 feet of snow since the storms began on Monday.

Other Sierra resorts reported 4 to 7 feet of new snow this week.

Tire chains were mandatory except for four-wheel drive vehicles on all three major trans-Sierra highways: Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, U.S. 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

A section of the latter highway near Kirkwood was closed due to avalanche-control activities.
