Police Identify Couple Arrested In Daly City Standoff

DALY CITY (BCN) - A six-hour police standoff in Daly City on Monday morning led to the arrest of two people who police said "recklessly" fired shots into an inhabited building and then refused to cooperate with authorities.

Officers who were investigating an unrelated alarm call at the intersection of West Market and Mission streets at about 5 a.m. heard gunshots coming from a nearby home, Daly City police Sgt. David Mackriss said.

About five shots were fired from a home on West Market Street into a cinderblock wall outside, Mackriss said. No one was struck by the gunfire.

The officers headed toward the sound and spotted a man and a woman -Daly City resident Joseph Camilleri, 29, and his girlfriend, Anna Tostanoski, 25 - outside the home, Mackriss said.

The pair darted into the home, and Mackriss said the couple refused to cooperate with officers who requested entry, triggering the standoff.

A SWAT and a negotiations team were called to the scene, and the street was cordoned off while authorities attempted to establish communication with Camilleri and Tostanoski.

The two were taken into custody peacefully at 11:15 a.m.

Camilleri and Tostanoski were booked into San Mateo County Jail on one count each of shooting into an inhabited dwelling and numerous counts of possession of illegal, unregistered weapons, Mackriss said.

Police determined that the shots had been fired from inside the home where Camilleri and Tostanoski had retreated.

Mackriss said the shooting was a "random discharge" of firearms.

"There's no good reason why they fired the shots," he said. "They acted in a reckless manner."

Police had initially said the standoff stemmed from a domestic disturbance, but Mackriss said Monday it does not appear there had been an argument.

"The origin of the dispute had nothing to do with their being boyfriend and girlfriend," Mackriss said. "They fired the shots, but it was not related to a domestic quarrel."

Police were able to maintain communication with Camirelli and Tostanoski "pretty much throughout the incident," Mackriss said.

A police spokesman said Monday that at one point, authorities tossed a phone into the home to establish contact.
