Inmate Walks Away From Dublin Jail

DUBLIN (KCBS/BCN) -- Alameda County deputies were searching for an inmate who escaped from the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on Tuesday, a sergeant said.

Ismael Cesda, 21, also known as Ismael Ramirez, was brought back to the jail from court early Tuesday evening and was discovered missing at around 11 p.m., Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Cesda managed to get to an area of the jail where inmates are released, but officials do not know how.

"We don't know if it was mechanical failure or human error," Nelson said.

Cesda, a Pleasanton resident, had been arrested in Fremont on Saturday night on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and evading police, Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran said.

Cesda and five other people, including three juveniles, led Fremont police on a car chase in a Toyota Highlander that had been reported stolen by Dublin Toyota, Veteran said.

The Highlander ran into a curb near Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue, and all six suspects ran away from the scene, he said.

The police arrested all of them, and the three juveniles were released into the custody of adult family members. The three adults, including Ramirez, were booked into the Fremont City Jail before being transferred to the Santa Rita Jail, Veteran said.

Cesda is described as a Hispanic man about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray sweat suit, Nelson said.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts was urged to call 911.
